Day 15

Five Star Pokemon

His four fists dazzle his enemies with great strength and ferocity, carrying enough power to erupt a volcano! His kicks crackle like thunder and whip a frenzy like a roaring typhoon! His gaze is deep and penetrates the spines of cowardly no-gooders the world over! Enter...LED-RIDER!

What's up guys? Tomorrow's Saturday, which means there will be a brand new episode of L.E.D. Rider, the most popular Tokusatsu brand of entertainment ever witnessed! LED will finally meet his archnemesis, Aria-Sama who has been hiding in the shadows and playing our hero like a fiddle all this time! What a douche!

When I first started Ledian, I had no idea what to do. I thought of doing something spritely, like maybe making him/her a spirit of the forest. There's something delicate about Ledian's design, and I thought making a fey/fairy with airy and wispy lines could create a nice little piece. I wasn't getting anywhere and so I began to examine the character more.

I noticed the bug eyes reminded me of something, and pretty soon, I recalled Kamen Rider. Although KR is based off a grasshopper, I found the calling to create a sentai styled hero based on a ladybug and pushed onwards with great excitement. I merged what little I knew about KR and heavily influenced the design with what I grew up with and loved, the Power Rangers. Obviously, this is a shout out to my dude, the OG Jason.

I translated the details of the original design to a suit and body that was kinda chibi styled. This would make the four armed hero thing a bit more managable and look less cheesy. Don't get it twisted, when our man is in civvies, he only got two arms. When he transforms, BLAM- whaddup 2 extra arms!? I thought of giving him a sword and a blaster, but I felt it was too much for the design as it looked to busy. Posing with double martial arty hands/fists looks baller as hell anyway.

Everything else was straightforward. I opted for a gangster-ass scarf like the old timey designs of sentai rangers in lieu of wings, as I felt putting such "accessories" on this dude might involve some mechanical set ups and I wanted to keep this simple and tight; like it was a cheap/budgety costume that we're familiar with when we watch these kinds of shows.

I added white flourishes and left the peach/tan colored center decal to only reach halfway as it would look like our dude was naked down the middle otherwise. Other than that, I think that about covers it! I had soo much fun working on this piece. I'm a huge fan of sentai anything, so it was a pleasure to create my own hero for today's One a Day illustration.

The Question of the Day!

Using only Bug-type Pokemon, create an ally or villain to LED-Rider! Exclude Ariados, who is Ledian's rival in this "show". Have fun and be sure to give a name, their appearance, their powers, and their relationship to the hero!

Have a great weekend!

Exploring the creatures of Gold and Silver, Pokemon One a Day Series 2 can be seen as both a standalone project and expansion to the original marathon of artwork that sought to present one unique new illustration per day. This project builds upon the exploration of personal technical and philosophical concepts and visual styles under daily deadline to create quality works for personal and professional growth.
