The Leaf Pokemon

Chikorita is up to bat as we officially start series 2 of Pokemon One a Day! The Johto region being so full of so many new creatures to discover was about the best thing to happen to me as a young fan of the series. Who woulda thought that there could be even more of a world to explore!? Little did any of us realize the phenomenon Pokemon was going to become when even 151 felt like an overflowing amount of creatures to sort through.

In the games, because Bulbasaur was my first starter in Blue, I followed suit with grass types and chose Chikorita! Here we have a super cute critter who hides the fact that he's going to be a huge whimp when he grows up and stands next to Typhlosion and Feraligatr. But, forget the evolutions! Today, we take a look at the spiritual successor to Bulbasaur.

Chikorita was actually going to be in the first game, where its prototype form known as "Happa" was cut along with another 40 or so other Pokemon to be saved for Gold and Silver. Chikorita's original design was very goopy and blobby, and I sort of channeled that for this first illustration. I made this fella as rotund and tried to just make him cute as hell.

And you know what? I think I was successful. Yeah, I'm saying I murdered the cute factor on this one. Don't lie; you know you want to pinch his cheeks.

So that wraps it up! Not much to say here for the first of the starters and the entry point to Pokemon One a Day, season 2! 99 more to go!

...99?

Oh.

Ooooooh. Oh boy.

This is gonna be a while.

Pokemon One a Day continues with Season 2! Exploring the creatures of Gold and Silver, Season 2 can be seen as both a standalone project and expansion to the original marathon of artwork that sought to present one unique new illustration per day. This project builds upon the exploration of personal technical and philosophical concepts and visual styles under the watch of a daily deadline to create quality works for personal and professional growth.
