Hello everyone, it's that time of year again where a bunch of people start going back to school. So in celebration of this moment, I'm going to recommend a few mangas. Don't worry too much as these mangas aren't too long… at the moment.

Sakamoto Desu Ga

Synopsis:

This picaresque manga follows the most amazing person ever, Sakamoto, as he goes about his daily life and solves people's problems. Well, that's not entirely accurate as the manga actually written from the perspective of Sakamoto's peers. Each chapter follows a different person who has some sort of problem that generally revolves around Sakamoto. Through out each chapter, each character goes through some sort of character development with some kind of interaction with Sakamoto with some hilarious results.

Why you should read this:

This is easily one of the funniest mangas I have read in ages. It basically takes a Gary Stu character, Sakamoto, and makes him the funniest and most awesome character to ever exist. Sakamoto is just so good at everything that it's absurd. The writing and the art are top notch as they completely reinforce the humor of the series. I can't tell you how much fun I've had reading this manga. It's just so damn funny.

Re:Monster

*Based on the web novel of the same name*

Synopsis:

Tomokui Kanata, an esper with the ability to absorb skills from the things he eats, is killed by his stalker and then reincarnated into a fantasy world as a goblin named Rou. Once Tomoki reincarnates, he discovers that he retains his memories and his esper ability from his previous life. So with his memories and abilities, Tomoki must learn how to survive in his new world as a goblin.

Why you should read this:

I find the premise quite interesting because it comes from a perspective I've never seen before, a fantasy story through the eyes of a goblin. What also drew me to this manga is that it has a very fresh feeling to it in that you're learning something new constantly about the world or the characters in it, be it about new skills Rou (Tomokui) learns, the beings in the world, or the structure of the clan of goblins Rou is growing up in.

Tsuyokute New Saga

Synopsis:

The magic Swords man, Kali, has just defeated the demon lord, but the cost to defeat him was great. Kali lost his friends, his lover, his home, everything to defeat the demon lord and soon he will lost his life due to the wounds he received from his struggle. On the verge of death he approaches the relic the demon lord was guarding and in a flash, he is suddenly sent to four years into the past. With the knowledge of the future, Kali works to prevent the rise of the demon lord in the first place.

Why you should read this:

New Saga is by no means original, but it does a great job getting the reader invested in the main character. From the very beginning you get a good sense of who Kali is because he was in a suicide squad to take out the demon lord. Kali knows that everyone in his group will either succeed and die or fail and die and when his time comes, he's relatively at peace but once he gets a second chance to live his teen years, he starts making deliberate steps to change the future. It's interesting to see how his current situation has changed from the previous time line and I wish to know more about how Kali will act.

Tate No Yuusha no Nariagari

*Adapted from a light novel of the same name*

Synopsis:

Iwatani Naofumi along with 3 other men are summoned to a fantasy world to become one of the four heroes of the land. Unfortunately for Naofumi, he is the hero of the shield, which means that he has absolutely no offensive power. Since, Naofumi's position is viewed as the weakest, he is quickly ostracized and then betrayed by the ones who had summoned him. Not knowing what to do, Naofumi tries to fulfill his duty as soon as possible, while living this hostile environment.

Why you should read this:

What makes Tate so interesting is that it completely flips the summoned to another world story on its head, while having a compelling lead. Basically, Naofumi undergoes a very drastic change of character in first few chapters of the manga and you get to see why this happens to him. It's absolutely brutal… and I love it because it makes Naofumi lose trust in people, which changes the way he interacts with the world around him. Naofumi must think a few steps ahead of each of his actions if he doesn't want to get betrayed again.

Ore to Hero Mahou Shojo

Synopsis:

Hayato is a man who has dreamed of becoming a hero. Luckily, he lives in a world where technology has advance to the point where it can start producing items that allow people to transform into heroes power rangers style. So once he became a hero, he begins to fulfill his duties. Unfortunately, when Hayato transforms, he essentially becomes a magical girl, which makes doing his job quite awkward.

Why you should read this:

If I had to compare this manga to another one, I would say it's like One Punch Man, but with much less content to show what the world and characters of this manga are like and drawn by One himself. The way this manga is like One Punch Man (One version) in that its art style, character design, and humor are quite similar. The characters designs are quite simple, but they are distinct enough to give us an idea of each character's personality. The humor is great in that it's quite glib. Characters will often speak their mind in blunt ways and it's funny to watch when it happens in unexpected ways. The art… it's not that great, but I feel the other good parts of the manga make up for it. The only downside to this manga is that there isn't enough of it because there are traces of something bigger in the manga, but there isn't enough time to expand on it.
