Pokemon One a Day: Magikarp
Magikarp as a pinata.
That is all.
TAY's very own Nach helped me with this direction a few weeks ago. I usually never use suggestions or bounce too many ideas off of you guys as I like to come up with the ideas myself for "authenticity" or whatever mental reason I have about keep this project and its rules...But the idea fit so well I had to implement it!
Thanks guys for checking out today's art and writ-
This is too short for a post? Come on now! I draw an entirely new illustration for you each day - isn't that enough!?
Okay okay, fine.
Today's work features Magikarp, everyone's favorite pipsqueak who promises the world that they shall face its wrath one day! But only after it's done splashing.
How is this thing ever supposed to level up when it can't damage a fly?! T.T
The poor thing is a punching bag! And it's that thought that we equate to the karp that dictates a pinata is the absolute best way to illustrate this guy. Picture parties in the Pokeverse with little children attacking the most helpless of Pokemon - its one of those ideas that you feel like you should have thought of it sooner!
Just don't smack this pinata in front of Gyarados.
The challenges I faced with this piece was getting the angle right, despite having one of the original artwork as a reference. I tried to get an angular shape to make it look less organic - of course, the texture brush would help in making it covered in streamer-like decoration opposed to be scaly and lifelike. Other than that, the piece was very straightforward, as was the concept. I used several layers to get the tiers of the confetti to look nice and, well, layered.
So there! I don't think anything has to be said other than leaving your condolences for ol' Magikarp...Stay tuned for tomorrow to see if he gets redemption with the next illustration on Pokemon One a Day! Thanks for looking and good night!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
