The Tadpole Pokemon
You are feeling dizzy....Diiiiiizzzy!!! Did it work?
I suppose that swirl isn't that hypnotizing, is it? Darn. Oh, what am I referring to? The swirling whirl that unfurls in the belly of my Poliwhirl, today's Pokemon illustration of the day! Where I took a more realistic approach with Poliwag, I decided to take some liberties with a cartoonier version that takes whirl into a new level. I made the whirl on Poliwag's belly a fleshy color to represent the original idea that its internal organs were appearing on the outside.
Today's Poliwhirl illustration features a slimy and adorable froggier version of Poliwhirl, with a raging whirlpool for a belly to give this piece a focus not only to represent the character's name, but typing. Because I turn Poliwag into a proper polliwhog or tadpole, I decided to continue the trend of grounding the Pokemon into its ribbity-roots. With small subtle changes we have a Poliwhirl that has frog like feet and hands, and more importantly a prominent mouth. This change makes all the difference, doesn't it?
Originally, Poliwhirl was sporting a sort of creepy frown, when I first wanted to make this Poliwhirl hypnotizing. I originally planned to use a very messy and circular pattern to form the body of the Pokemon - the end result is far more polished and fleshed out. This, the curvature of his frown fit the round body and the circular indentation housing the belly of the Pokemon.
Because I couldn't quite capture Poliwag's cute factor, I decided to transfer it over to Poliwhirl, which could handle an adjective due to the cartoony style I went with. Here Poliwhirl has a smile and ridiculously bubbly eyes, a connection I made because he's a water type, and bubbles...and water...and wet things in sphere that go pop when you touch them. Yeah, I have weird way of seeing things some times!
Not much else needs to be said at this point, other than leaving you folk my heartfelt thanks for viewing my art and reading this write up! We'll wrap up the Poli family tomorrow, so stay tuned.
Lastly, I want to wish you all a happy, safe, healthy, super awesome, all time best new year's to come! I hope you meet all your resolutions and then some. Kick 2014's ass!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
