The Fire Horse Pokemon
The Pokemon who starts the legendary Pokemon animated series intro is here! Flying off into...outer space or whatever, this unicorn avoids become barbecue because of, like, magic or something. It's Rapidash!
So with yesterday's soft, gentle, and stationary Ponyta, I sought to juxtapose the two against one another by creating an illustration that puts the dash in Rapidash. Horses are magnificent creatures, often considered majestic and powerful. Like with Ponyta, I found a reference to base my work off of since I don't really draw horses and attempting to draw anything you don't have experience drawing will definitely show. I found a steed who I thought was handsome and in a unique pose, and started drafting realistically.
I wanted to make my Rapidash black with blue flames, and thought about what it means to be a "shiny" Pokemon. I'm lucky enough to have found a shiny Ponyta in my Pokemon Y play through, and it looks pretty cool as a Rapidash with purple flames. However, I began to wonder why Pokemon could only come in one flavor, and being shiny was so rare and possibly a mutation of sorts. Look at our real world animals: one breed of dog can come in several colors, as do horses and many many other animals I'm too lazy to list. It would be great if Pokemon had several different flavors, such as having another color or speckles, for example.
Rapidash is a horse, and I imagined people could go to farms and buy or breed horses there to get a color they like in this Pokemon world I envision. I would imagine certain Rapidash have various color coats that would dictate their flames, too. However, all that is simply my mind running wild, and I decided to tone it back to the original colors to keep things simple and make this Pokemon resemble the original with a few stretches by throwing in pinks and magentas to liven it up.
I was originally planning to make the piece have a very curvy flow to it, with flames billowing out but it was too plain - and to illustrate it in a new style as the challenge guides me, I decided to have both curves and straight lines battle it out on the canvas, but ultimately give a sense of movement and energy. Abstract shapes, colors, and patterns adorn Rapidash in an effort to give the piece a liveliness that both fire and horses represent. The piece is fun and goes into a territory of an original style I haven't touched yet for the series, so challenge met!
Thanks all for reading and viewing my work! I hope you enjoyed these last equine inspired creatures and will meet me again tomorrow with a lovable oaf of a Pokemon! Stay tuned and stay classy, friends! Enjoy your evening!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
