Nagai was a 82-year-old veteran voice actor. He collapsed in his hotel room, staff checked hours later to find him, got him to the hospital, but he passed away.

Popular roles were Netero from the 2011-version of HunterXHunter, Happosai of Ranma 1/2, 006 of the 1968 version of Cyborg 009, Sado from Space Battleship Yamato, Cid in the DS version of FF4, some roles in the Gundam franchise (Degwin Zabi of the 1st anime and Syam Vist of Gundam Unicorn), Senbee's Grandpa from Dr. Slump, and Sha-Fu of Gekiranger. His dub roles included George Costanza of Seinfeld, Albus Dumbledore of Harry Potter, Yosemite Sam of Looney Tunes, Yoda of Star Wars Episodes 1-3, and Phil (Disney's Hercules) in Kingdom Hearts.
