Day 76

Armor Bird Pokemon

In the Air Force, you earn your wings. The Steel Skarmories were the name of a now retired band of heroes in a great war who took to the skies in aircrafts that live up to the name of Skarmory. Those decorated pilots were awarded medals they wear with pride and I’m here to show you what those look like as we start off a new week of One a Day!

Skarmory is an interesting creature visually who only holds up because he sorta looks cool while altogether being sort of hard to believe could actually exist. Leave your pseudo science out for this one! When envisioning a piece, I first saw a concept to make my own bomber plane that would have been drawn in a remix to the Rhyhorn piece I did for Series 1.

It would have been cool, but I thought it might be a bit too obvious and more than anything, I wanted to draw those shark faces on it and that would just throw it off more than anything, so I started to brainstorm other Air Force concepts. Being a huge fan of Sons of Anarchy, I thought then to make some sort of patch that a club might wear on the back of their jackets. Eventually, that evolved into a more traditional pin and it was smooth sailing from there.

The obvious visual connection is the “Top Gun” logo. It’s been a long long time since I saw the movie, so I wasn’t even thinking about that at all when working on the piece. It’s a coincidence that Skarmory has red feathers too so after i began to work in the colors, I thought it looked really familiar so I checked it out and I laughed to see how similar it looked. Crazy cool coincidence!

I ended things my layering a coat of brushed steel over the work to get a nice texture and then added highlights diagonally to get a nice reflection going. “Fly or Die” is more a nod to “ride or die” mentality that biker gangs have, again when I started I was thinking more SoA but any number of air sayings could have worked.

And we’re done here! Hope you guys dig Skarmory! This was a badass piece to work on and I hope you agree. The rest of this week is going to be pretty fun, and I said it before I think last week, but all the coming Pokemon have a lot to work with so I’m feeling hyped and ready to give it my all for each one. Let’s take out the remaining 24 in style!
