Day 84
Painter Pokemon

Meta enough for you? Smeargle is a very cute and interesting Pokemon that really owns his niche. When I realized Smeargle was coming up, I wondered why I never had more of a connection to it, and began to wonder what everyone might expect out of me for the day illustration. After tons of brainstorming, I came up with a concept I couldn’t wait to put on paper...A self portrait that swaps my face for my hand!

Also, this is random, but can you guys add me to your 3DS friends list? My FC is: 2766 9375 3954. I guess it’s not entirely random, but related to Pokemon: I want more Friend Safaris LOL. Thanks <3

Going into the original draft, I thought it’d be cute and meta for Smeargle to be painting himself. I had him originally use his paintbrush to paint the second half of his body, starting with his foot. I thought this was a cute and simple idea that I think would have easily sufficed...But it wasn’t long until I began to wonder if I could amp it up.

Breaking the border, I thought for a Pokemon version of me, I could showcase my own hand creating the illustration of the day. This would literally insert me into the work unseen in the series thus far, and play up my connection to the painter Pokemon. I used my own reference to paint in the hand and admittedly, it could have came out more realistic if I pushed myself but I do work on a daily deadline and I found a place I liked and stopped before I fudged it up. I briefly considered taking a photo and inserting it in, but I thought that was a cop out and if I were really going all out as envisioned, I had to prove my merit and paint my hand.

As for Smeargle, I played with the concept of a magic tablet pen (that’s the same pen I actually use to draw in Photoshop) that turned sketches into a living creature. I sketched out Smeargle and filled in details over 3 layers: Top layer was the left side that was fleshed out, the middle was the sketchy pencil lines, and bottom layer was base colors to be defined by the top layer. I used smudge tools and blended areas like the cap and arm to really appear dimensional in direct contrast to the right hand of the body.

Finally, to get a loop going, I flattened the completed work and distorted it so it could lay on the ground underneath Smeargle’s brush. One more final look over allowed me the final touches and we’re all set! Hope you guys enjoyed the work and like my sexy caramel hand! And Smeargle too, of course.

Question of the Day: Smeargles across the land over time and space have contributed to Kalo’s Art Museum. What are your favorite artworks of his/her? Use real world paintings as a base!

For example, ahem, Machoke as David, or Machamp as the Vitruvian Man!

Exploring the creatures of Gold and Silver, Pokemon One a Day Series 2 can be seen as both a standalone project and expansion to the original marathon of artwork that sought to present one unique new illustration per day. This project builds upon the exploration of personal technical and philosophical concepts and visual styles under daily deadline to create quality works for personal and professional growth.
