String Spit Pokemon
I got a whack phone. I really do, but it works, and that's all that matters to me. I'm a bit jealous that all of y'all prolly got a freakin' Holodeck built into your touchscreen, but I have the all time classic Brickbreaker game in 8 bit graphics, so what's really GUCCI!?
But you got the power of the emoji too which edges me out just by a slight margin! A tiny bit! Although I can't use them on my mobile, I know how prevalent they are in how society (or at least the young folk) as far as pop culture and modern day communication goes...And this is why I decided to use Spinarak to weave a new take on emoticons!
I got this idea right away when I stacked up the styles and concepts for exploration for the little spider. Emojis communicate all sort of thoughts and emotions, and the fact that Spinarak's main feature/decal is a face of sorts gave me the perfect grounds to translate whatever I wanted for a sort of out there illustration that highlights a major form of communication today.
I went with love because, well, it would be the cutest emotion to capture in this "screenshot". We all lluuuurve teh loveszsz. I was considering drawing out an entire phone/pokedex communicator sorta deal with the battery and wi fi signal at the top and all that other jazz that but then I realized it wasn't necessary for a strong illustration. The more simpler, the better - we don't want to lose sight of Spinarak as the focus, of course!
Indeed, I think it was the smaller flourishes that helped push the illustration to reach a new level of fun. I created text balloons mirroring popular OSes, added the checkmark and delivery...and wait, look at the date and time sent! Interesting...
So, that about covers it! Got to tread some new ground for today's illustration and it was an absolute blast. What's fun about works like this one where I go a bit out there in concept is reading and hearing what you guys think, especially if it's not what you expected. As such, please leave your comments and/or critiques below and let's discuss the work or whatever else you want, in addition to your response to...
