Recovery Complete

Happy New Year! I hope you folks have recovered from the holiday madness and that everyone is starting to get their bodies ready for Monday, which is likely a return to form for most people.

Last week was my son's 8th birthday and it was a grand time of many presents, lots of video games, laser tag, and then the eventual flu/cold that comes with touching everything in those children casinos. You know, those places that make you gamble tokens for tickets. $40 in tokens and that $2 knock-off lightsabre junk toy was all his.

We just recevied his Halo: Master Chief Collection from Amazon.ca on Friday. We originally bought it at Costco for his birthday but Amazon had it for $20 cheaper during the Boxing Week sales. I convinced him to wait for the Amazon.ca order and as a bonus I'd order How To Train Your Dragon 2 on 3D Bluray (so I broke even, but ended up with two things instead of one). I look forward to cracking them both open tomorrow.

We have played a fair bit of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (keep those awesome naming conventions going Nintendo) that he received for his birthday, along with half a dozen Amiibos. It is ok. I've never been a fan of Smash Bros. and this game really doesn't feel all that different from the Wii version to me. Xander is having fun with the level creator though and seems to enjoy playing the game with the family.

Hard to believe he is eight already. People tell you when you have children that the time just flies by, but it truly does.

I didn't have a lot of time for my own games last week, but I was able to have a session of The Elder Scrolls Online with my gaming buddy.

We've entered the third faction's lands: the Ebonheart Pact. This is loads of fun since this was the area I played in the beta and it is amazing to see how far the game has come since then. We've just scratched the surface, but I really enjoy these lands with the snow covered peaks, active volcanos, and the giant mushrooms.

I did manage a bit of time with ZombiU last week. Just spent some time in the Tower Of London that was nice and freaky. I'm slightly sad that I haven't had any change or upgrade to the melee. Maybe that will come later, but it would be nice to have a new melee weapon or new attack styles. I used melee in the game 90% of the time and the one attack they give you grows a little stale. I still love the melee combat in the game, but a little variety wouldn't hurt.

I also played a surprising amount of Volgaar The Viking on Xbox One during the holidays. It was one of those monthly "freebees" with Xbox Live, but I've become hooked.

It really feels like a great throwback to many games I played in arcades, maybe even a little shameless in the copying of Taito's Rastan. However, the game has tight controls and a punishing but fair gameplay that I find compelling. I suck at it, but I keep coming back to it.

So, I hope to get back to ESO and ZombiU this weekend. I feel like I've been neglecting saving the world over the holidays and it will be nice to get back to the games.

What are you playing this weekend?
