Today marks one year since the first time I commented on TAY, one year since I joined this fantastic community. It's been a great year and I just wanted to take some time to look back, and to say thank you.
I first discovered TAY back in January of last year thanks to Bonny's Pokemon One-A-Day. His Tentacruel illustration was featured in the morning roundup on Kotaku and it caught my interest. But then I sort of forgot about TAY until One-A-Day appeared in the roundup again, this time with Cubone, and reminded me. So I lurked for a few weeks on TAY until I worked up the courage to leave a comment.
You see, I have a history of social anxiety which even extends to commenting online, so at the time it was a very hard thing for me to do. But it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Bonny's friendly response, and claims that everyone on TAY was super nice dissipated my anxiety. About a week later I wrote my first piece on TAYClassic, on my social anxiety of all things, and how games helped me to deal with it.
And that's when all the positive comments started coming in. So I wrote another thing which got even more positive reactions! Aikage and Morie really rolled out the welcome wagon for me and I was granted authorship. So I made my authorial debut on TAY by sharing one of my most personal stories, something I'd never really shared with anyone. I don't think I could have done it anywhere else but here.
TAY gave me a place to vent and get out all this crap I had been keeping inside and it felt so good to finally get it out. And it also gave me a place to share my unique perspective on things. My next post was an analysis of disabled characters in video games which got shared directly to Kotaku's main page. To this day it is still my most recommended and commented on article!
Since then I've written a number of things such as sharing my experience at PAX East last year, more personal stories, and, of course, my many, many posts about metal music! I even got to review a couple of games and interview one of my favorite video game music cover artists!
But TAY has been much more than a place for me to write about stuff. TAY is a community. I love talking to everyone on the Open Forum every morning and on the Graveyard Shift every night! Even though I've never met any of you in person, I feel like we're really close friends. You truly welcomed me here, and I can't believe that in just a year I've been able to become the host of the Wednesday TAY Time Chat and Friday Open Forum, a moderator on our awesome IRC channel, and the overlord of TAY Game Night! Think of where I'll be this time next year!
So thanks Bonny for bringing me to TAY. Thanks Aikage for rolling out the welcome wagon. Thanks Z and Nach for sharing my early articles on TAYClassic to the main page. Thanks Morie for granting me authorship. And thanks TAY for being the awesome, friendly, and fun corner of the Internet that I like to call home!
