Look out, Bravely Default - there's a new arrival in Final Fantasy inspired stories! Square Enix has continued the Final Fantasy X storyline in the form of a novella, titled Final Fantasy X-2.5. While it has only been released in Japan, its infamy is quickly becoming wide-spread, creating some heated discussions across Final Fantasy forums and even prompting a hilarious parody article from Play4Real Gaming (which also deserves credit for the header image).
The rest of this article will contain spoilers for the Final Fantasy X-2.5 novella, as well as possible spoilers for the rest of the Final Fantasy X series. Consider yourself warned.
With that out of the way, I have to say that the main problem with these spoilers is that they're just so bizarre. Frankly, the few details that have been revealed so far on the plot all but unbelievable. Users from NeoGAF and Reddit are reporting roughly the same story - one which deals with death, but not quite in the expected sense. It is a Final Fantasy game, after all.
The main issue people seem to be taking with the story is that during their adventures, he and Yuna become shipwrecked and stranded on an island. Before too long, Tidus finds a spherical object he assumes could be nothing other than a blitzball. His instincts get the better of him and approaches it, presumably to kick it. Much to his surprise, the blitzball turns out to be a bomb, which explodes. The explosion not only kills Tidus, but also sends his head flying, which the story mentions still has the surprised look on its face. Tidus's newly decapitated head lands at Yuna's feet and she passes out.
Keep in mind that there are different translations floating around the internet right now, but the one I mentioned above is the most common one. Another version of the translated text of that scene, as well as some of the other scenes, can be found here (semi-NSFW).
Don't worry too much about Tidus, though. From what I can tell, Yuna wishes him back to life and it all works out. Well, sort of, because the explosion/death made Tidus lose his memories - and if he finds out he's dead, he'll disappear.
While details for the plot of the story are incredibly hazy, some of the Amazon.jp reviews mention that there is a good deal of sexual content. In fact, people are beginning to obtain scans of pages with examples, such as the one mentioned by a user on the NeoGAF thread:
"There's a scan of one page in which Tidus tells Yuna if they get into battle he might lose his fighting spirit because he's distracted by how sexy she is."
I'm honestly not sure what to think of all of this. The story seems too bizarre, the characters too unfamiliar and the occurrences ... just too random. It seems like there are either problems with the translations that are being tossed around, or perhaps we just aren't seeing the entire story. Either way, it gave birth to this .gif, so it can't be all bad ... right?
With the possibility of Final Fantasy X-3 being hinted at, not only in this interview but apparently also at the end of the novella, I can't help but wonder if we'll be seeing an official English release of the story. I'll admit that after hearing these rumors, I'm now incredibly excited for a new Final Fantasy X sequel now. Just for all the wrong reasons.
What do you think about the news on the novella thus far, TAY? Have you heard any other news on this? Do you think this could all be caused by some faulty translations?
Since Final Fantasy X was my first game in the series to play, I still have an attachment with all of the characters in the game. Honestly, I'd be more than happy to find out that this was all a major misunderstanding - or gods forbid some kind of dream sequence.
