The fighting genre has had a high profile resurgence in 2017. Marvel vs. Capcom, Injustice, Guilty Gear, Dragon Ball Xenoverse, Gundam Versus, Pokken Tournament and ARMS all released or received console ports this year with Street Fighter 5 Arcade Edition and Dragon Ball FighterZ being announced. The next video game genre setting itself up for a strong 2018 is, surprisingly, dating sims.

Ladykiller in a Bind started bringing attention to the genre in late 2016. In 2017, Dream Daddy and took up the mantle. The recently announced Boyfriend Dungeon looks to innovate the genre next year by adding dungeon crawling to the mixture. Hoping to also expand the meaning of “dating sim” is the newly announced Kickstarter game Ambition: A Minuet in Power. The game centers around Yvette, a woman freshly deserted in Paris on the cusps of revolution. Emboldened instead of demoralized by her situation, Yvette decides to thrive in her new city and sets off to charm her way to the top of the social ladder.

That’s the trick of Ambition. You’re not dating for romance. You’re dating to gain favor with one of five social factions. Every mechanic revolves around advancing your position in pre-revolution Paris. The clothing you wear, the parties you attend and the people you charm all have the chance to increase your reputation around the city. Do this well enough and Yvette just might make it out on the right side of history.

If any of that sounds interesting, you can back the game at its Kickstarter page. You can also check out the launch trailer which hints at the game’s multiple endings. Joy Manufacturing Co. set their goal at $60,000 with rewards at $1 to access Kickstarter updates, $15 for a digital copy of the game and many more tiers bundling art books and CDs of the soundtrack by John Robert Matz. Stretch goals are $80,000 for an additional artist and $90,000 to implement an additional player character. Release is currently estimated around November of 2018.

You can find the game’s website at ambition-game.com. Their Twitter is @JoyManuCo. The dev team posts videos (only speed painting for now) to their youtube channel. As always, you can find me here or @J_Plays_Game5 on Twitter.
