A Different Approach to Mobile Gaming

With E3 going on right now, there is so much gaming news flying around right now. Big triple-A titles from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are being announced and more details from already-announced games are being released. Interestingly, one of the games I'm most hyped for is a mobile game.

The game is question is Hail to the King: Deathbat, the game being developed by metal band Avenged Sevenfold and Subscience Studios. In the latest episode of Up At Noon, hosted by Greg Miller of IGN, Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows stopped by to discuss Deathbat.


Avenged Sevenfold are no strangers to the game industry, having previously contributed to the soundtrack for Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II, even making an appearance in the latter. M. Shadows even mentioned that at one point he wrote up a complete idea for a triple-A game that he shared with his friends over at Treyarch, the studio behind Black Ops.

They told him that in order to seriously take on making that game, M. Shadows would need to quit Avenged Sevenfold and focus full time on being a game designer. Of course, that led the band to try their hand at an indie-developed mobile game.

That mobile game, Hail to the King: Deathbat, has been in development for two years and is slated for a July 2014 release. M. Shadows reveals that the game is heavily influenced by games he grew up with such as The Legend of Zelda. The experience he wants to capture is close to a console experience and pushes mobile hardware to it's limits. This is not some casual affair like you typically find in mobile games.

So what makes this game different than the typical mobile game? This is a game for serious gamers who want to sit down and play for an extended period of time. Typically mobile games are geared toward short burst of play but Deathbat is designed with a more console-like experience in mind. That's an interesting approach that doesn't always work out but I have a feeling that fans of the band will be happy to sit down for hours instead of minutes to play this game.


Another interesting thing about this game is that it's not going to have microstransactions, something mobile games are infamous for. The only money you need to spend on this game is the one time $4.99 sale price. Deathbat is not about making money. This is a game developed by gamers to provide a fun experience for gamers. The band isn't just slapping their name on it to make a quick buck. The guys in Avenged Sevenfold are heavily invested in this project, writing the story, making design choices, and composing the soundtrack. Hail to the King: Deathbat is a true labor of love.

I've never been excited for a mobile game before, but the approach Avenged Sevenfold and Subscience Studios are taking on this game have me eagerly awaiting its release.
