A Retrospective Look at the Homeworld Trilogy

Homeworld is one of PC gaming’s most beloved and well-designed titles, and its recent high definition remaster has brought it back into the spotlight in a big way. This video looks at what makes the first game so compelling as a real-time strategy game and as a piece of science fiction media. It looks at Homeworld: Cataclysm, the creative middle title which blends the classic gameplay of the first Homeworld with survival horror elements that work remarkably well. And finally it covers Homeworld 2, examining why it isn’t remembered as fondly as the other two. There’s also an appendix on getting Cataclysm to run on Windows 8!

All told, the Homeworld trilogy is an incredibly unique series of games: dense, challenging, and extremely memorable. This video tries to get into the deep specifics of why that is.
