The Psi Pokemon
The Psi Pokemon family has reached its culmination in today's illustration of Pokemon One a Day!
Alakazam gave me a lot of trouble. I couldn't figure out a direction to take visually, or settle on the pose for my rendition. I wanted to showcase Alakazam's high Special Attack in a very contained way. With both Abra and Kadabra showcasing their powers in their own unique ways via the art style, I wanted to calm down the energy of the rendition and depict Alakazam's power through substance and style.
Alakazam is one of my favorite Pokemon, and I wanted to do it justice. Alakazam's two spoons are part of his identity, so I decided to play them up with detail and enlarging them on the canvas to catch the viewer's eye. I also decided to make them less instruments of channeling his power and a manifestation of his telekinetic mastery. If it were up to me, I would have given Abra one spoon, Kadabra with two, and Alakazam passing on them knowing he has mastered the ability to focus and channel psychic powers.
All three pieces are connected in one way - vertical movement. I brought it back here in a way to connect his eyes to his hand forming his two spoons, right before battle. I haven't connected other pieces visually so this was a first, all while trying to give each work their own voice, not only from one another in this evolutionary line, but from every other work I've done so far as well.
Regardless, I kept the design of the original Alakazam for the most part, with slight taloring here and there but altered the spoons in their own unique way to make the work carry my signature. It's an illustration that is pretty straight forward and I'm happy with the aesthetics, and I hope you do too! Thanks for reading as always, and see you tomorrow!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
