What's up Ani-Tayers? Long time no post or see! I've missed you all but rest assured I've been anime-ing while I've been gone. So here I am with another question for you all.

DamsonRhee and I were discussing on her Not-So-New-Anime post why Another needed a beach episode and why it seems like why all anime needed such an episode? It's an interesting cliche you see in a lot of anime nowadays.

To start off, Another is a rather dark anime. Like, people dying random, gruesome, gratuitous deaths for no reason. So something about sun, beach and happiness goes against everything this anime builds. It's a horror anime, so unless a shark shows up it is totally out of place with the overall tone of the series.

You see this a lot in Another.

But strangely enough, it worked. Don't ask me how, but somehow it fits for the series.

Then on the other side of the spectrum, you have something like Highschool of the Dead which a beach episode is probably mandatory and was one of the first things checked on the Fan Service Checklist.

One of the least fan servicey pictures I could find.

So Ani-Tayers, what do you think about the infamous beach/vacation/swimsuit episode? Is it an unnecessary staple of anime? Do you love them, hate them, or have no strong feelings one way or another? Do you have a favorite one or one that seriously sticks out like a sore thumb within the series?

Also, does Free! count?
