Arbok is a Pokemon that has a design element that clearly needed to be exploited for my interpretation. Obviously it would be the "face" thats eerily looking at you on his chest. When it comes to these drawings/designs/illustrations, I can build my interpretation on a number of things: the pokemon's visual aesthetic (no shiz), their personality, my opinion on what needs to be added or removed from the original, their past/future forms, and in this case, utilizing their moveset for inspiration.
I sought to have Arbok use "Glare", a move that paralyzes the opposing foe. I wanted to illustrate Arbok from the point of view of a creature that has already been poisoned by it in battle, barely able to continue on. I know in the game you're only able to have one status change at a time, but let that go for this illustration. This creature is struggling, feeling the poison drain away its life. As it attempts to escape, Arbok goes in for the kill with one last glare, paralyzing the prey and leaving it in open for a quick kill.
So yeah, that's that! A bit grim but...that's Arbok for ya! The design of the face was somewhat inspired of the "dia de los muertos" art style, in case you were wondering or figured. Tomorrow...be prepared for this one dude...what was his name...? Pika-something or another, whatever...
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the entire catalogue of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
