Blastoise! The last of the original starters final evos! Whew, we're halfway there in finishing this project! Right? Right!? No. Not at all. Now get back to work, Bonny!!!
As I did with Venusaur and Charizard (although more apparent with Venusaur) I added the collage motif to give the three some uniformity as their roles as the final evos. I knew I wanted a raging sea to come to play, and right off the bat I thought of "The Great Wave off Kanagawa "
Before applying it to the work, I checked to make sure it was apart of public domain and it was! I found a way to fuse it to my already established draft of Blastoise and never looked back. The rest of it was cleaning up and resizing. I drew out Blastoise in this style and copied one half and pasted/flipped the other to give me perfect symmetry. At first he was a bit tall and lanky and that just looked wierd, so I found the right height and width of the big fella and bam, I found gold with the representation.
I think of the three starter evos I've drawn, I enjoy Blastoise the most. Maybe because I'm partial to the blue, and the great waves making an appearance (by the way, the original attempt feature the great wave on just one arm, like a full sleeve that appeared on a yakuza so i took it off so i wouldnt show gang affiliation lmao!)
So anyway, hope you dig! Be sure to share the art and let other fans know that such a project is under way! Thanks for your support and see you tomorrow!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the entire catalogue of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
