Last night, for those of you that missed it, we had a movie night. Shaun of the Dead!


My idea, my inspiration, as I was watching, was that from now on, I will create a food item to eat while watching the movie. It'd be fun if you follow along - I'll try to pick recipes that anyone can follow using things they have in their house. The recipes should tie into the movie somehow....

So, I'll do an example post for last night.

I went to London a while back and went to many a pub (even though I don't drink, the atmosphere in UK pubs is totally different than bars in America (/opinion). One of the things I could NOT get enough of was apple chutney with cheddar cheese sandwiches. Oh God they were so good I couldn't stop eating them for roughly 12 bucks a pop (thanks weak dollar to Euro conversion!)


So, in fitting with Shaun of the Dead (the Winchester?!), I present: Grilled cheese with apple Chutney.

Start with the chutney. This will make a lot and you can save it for a few days and have these sandwiches all the time.


1 pound apples (peeled, cored, cut into 1/2-inch pieces - about the size of your thumbnail)
1 small onion (diced)
1 tablespoon garlic (chopped)
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cayenne

Real easy, just throw everything in a bowl. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 45 minutes to an hour (until it is nice and thick).


1 pound of Apples is not a bag of apples, it's probably 3-4 apples depending on how big they are. For me, I always just use whatever is at the grocery store cheapest, because, poor. You can really use any kind of apple you want and think would taste good.

So after you make the Chutney...


Get 2 slices of bread

** pro tip: Sourdough bread is the absolute greatest bread for making grilled cheese. It's also 4x more expensive than the 99c loaf you can get, so if you're poor like me, it's Wonder Bread all the way. **


Put Cheddar Cheese (either shredded or slice, it don't matter none!) on one side of the sandwhich. Cover the cheese with Chutney - around 1/4 cup.

Close the sandwich.

Butter both the top and bottom of the sandwich liberally

Cook in a skillet/pan/tin foil/baby changing station on medium heat for about 2 minutes each side - or just keep flipping every minute or so until it is nice and golden brown. It's done, when it looks delicious and the cheese has just melted.


Cut in half and eat while typing one handed about how Harry Potter is going to need a resurrection spell after having his intestines eaten by zombies.
