Little hand grenade Pineco has evolved into a gorram Unicron for all intents and purposes!!! Yes, I told you I would go all out to make up for yesterday’s little loser for this monstrosity! Enter the literal fortress, Forretress! Not literally, because there’s no way you can get into this Death Star! Don’t think about it, rebel scum!!!
I’m not a fan of Pineco and Forretress, but hell if I see an opportunity to go beast mode, I’ll take it. I saw Forretress and immediately thought to give it a lot of character and flavor - both of these creatures have little to work with but the key difference is size and the nature of inspiration - a hand grenade can only be expanded so far...But a fortress? That’s something I could work with.
I stylized the face quite a bit - I gave him a nose, furrowed eye brows, and even sort of this mustache/beard element with all the bricks. The first few drafts had more browns and reds, as I went more earthy...I even considered adding some greenery as if this lifted off the earth and became this entity over centuries. In the end, I went more cooler as I wanted to make sure I represented the steel typing of the creature. To that end, I added steal girders/beams in lieu of the stones and rocks.
This is one of the most fun pieces I’ve worked on to date. It sorta reminded me of my work I did for Geodude and individually painting up all the little rocks on his body. Some other things to note about this design were the shape of the “eye” windows - I went with rectangular rather than circular so it’d look less cute and fit the more castle aesthetic better. I added flames to give some life to the creature figuratively and metaphorically and also helps with giving you an idea on how this thing runs/breathes. The cannons all run on sliding mechanisms and are all given their own unique designs to add to the inconsistent built upon nature of the entity. Finally, I used blur and sharpen tools to push and fade parts of the orb and details to give a sense of depth.
So there you go! I told you I would make up for yesterday’s subject. Hope you guys dig the work and be sure to look at the work in progress shots to get a better look at the creative process. Thanks guys for reading and checking out my work...Until tomorrow, see ya!
