The Puppy Pokemon
Welcome all, to the post Christmas Pokemon One a Day drawathon! Hope you all enjoyed the festivities and got wonderful gifts in between spending time with your loved ones! Today, I gift to you all an illustration of the puppy Pokemon, Growlithe!
I know some of you have been dying for me to answer the following question: "Is Bonny a dog or a cat person?" Today, the most sought after response in the history of anything ever asked is finally revealed - I am a dog person! As a fan of canines, I was excited to do Growlithe some justice...Especially because his evolution, which you'll see tomorrow, is a resounding fan favorite of dog lovers and Pokemon fans alike.
Anyway, Growlithe is a canine with tiger-like features seen in its orange fur with dark striping pattern. It's quite fluffy with its tuft of hair on its head, chest "beard", and tail. It were these elements that I used to decorate my rendition in the first draft. I went with something cartoony, giving the creature a very shapely contour and exaggerated features in the size of its head to show off the idiom (is that the right word?) of "puppy dog eyes". I illustrated him standing at attention with a sense of playfulness that rounds out adjectives used to describe the Pokemon.
Growlithe here stands tall, looks alert, is happy, and determined. I didn't specifically base my Growlithe off of one kind of dog, but that's the great thing about all of them - they all share these common traits and I kinda just went with what I thought looked best for aesthetic reasons. At this point, I see some Shiba inu and Corgi. Maybe you see something else or something more; let me know!
There's not much else to say in that I was excited to draw a dog Pokemon - Vulpix and Ninetales being an exception to a degree. Speaking of which, the two are foils off of one another, and I did something special for Ninetails. I wonder how Arcanine will reflect off the design I gave her? Stay tuned and look forward for tomorrows art and reveal to find out!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
