I'm really feeling it!

Dragon Pokemon

Dragon Type

So this will officially close out the Kanto Dex of the last family of Pokemon beyond the legendary pairing before the series bows...Let's put the spotlight on Dragonite, on Pokemon One a Day!

Spotlight or lighthouse? Yes, this is the return of the ginormundous Dragonite from the anime that was never really explained. Not only was that reveal of Dragonite on the show rather iconic, but it has an extremely special place in my memory - that episode my first foray into the world of Pokemon!

It wasn't through cards or the game that would get my 10 year old mind wound up in the phenomenon that was Pokemon, but the show; it was easily the most accessible form to reach it.

I had been hearing about Pokemon, and how it was all of a sudden this huge thing everyone needed to collect and play and watch and so on. I remember finding the channel and the show was already playing. Even in the minutes I watched with no idea of what was happening or who or what was on the screen, I was hooked. Characters I could relate to, interesting creatures, and that Dragonite - it was huge! It all blew my mind.

The Dragonite seen here towers over the lighthouse, standing amidst the ocean from where it may have emerged...Or was it from the sky? Is it benevolent? Or a harbinger of destruction? So many mysteries!

For the style, I decided to go with something painterly, and the loose strokes reminded me of many concept art I've seen are created for games and environments. This scene, which I envision personally at night time, is not a fully crafted shot in that a background is missing. I thought it might be fun to leave it out and instead have a light blue moon and the general coloring of the work tell the story. I'm not sure if it worked - so be sure to let me know if it did!

Other than that, the piece was straight forward in execution. From draft to painting, I kept a diagonal line to follow with the elements of the moon, Dragonite, and the lighthouse - background, middleground, and foreground. I painted very loose and lax sort of way. There are tight strokes here and there, such as the stairs going up the cliffside, as well as some of the waves in the ocean and highlights of the moonlight.

So there you have it! What do you think? Dragonite and family is closed out! Two more illustrations to go - insane. I've been working all weekend and today to get these 3 illustrations to the highest quality. I hope you feel that today's and the following 2 pieces of art are among my best yet. Thanks guys and see you tomorrow!

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
