Happy Mother’s Day!
and...Happy Weekend TAY!
I hope all the mothers out there have a great weekend and if you are travelling to see your mother, have a safe trip. If your country doesn’t do Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May, then you still have some time to plan something great for your Mom. (or you are already late)
It was a bit of a sad week around my house. Our little rat, Sassy, who I wrote about last week, suddenly took a sharp turn-for-the-worse. This was after her miraculous recovery from her previous health problems. She woke up having a great deal of trouble moving around and unable to feed herself. The most compassionate outcome was for us to take her to the vet and have her euthanized. It is always a sad affair to lose a pet and her sister, Zelda, is breaking my heart moping around her cage. Hopefully, she will adjust to not having her companion soon, but rats are extremely social and don’t do well on their own. Thankfully, there are lots of people here to heap love and attention on her.
I didn’t play a lot last week with everything going on, but I did manage a couple sessions with Far Cry.
I am having such a blast with the game. It is quite sophisticated, even compared to many modern titles. The enemy AI is fantastic with excellent combat and searching behaviours. One of the best behaviours, which I don’t know that I’ve seen elsewhere, is that the enemies will start randomly shooting in bushes to flush you out of your cover. I really wish Far Cry 3 and 4 had enemies that did this, it would have made the game much more challenging.
And Far Cry is definitely challenging. My biggest complaint about Far Cry 3 and 4 is how damn easy they are, even on the hardest difficulty. The original game in the series certainly doesn’t have this problem. I’m playing on the highest difficulty and it kicks my ass fairly often. It is a glorious ass-kicking though, I wish more games offered such a satisfying challenge.
The enemy AI does seem to mess up rather often, mainly when a model gets stuck on an object and fails to correct (the game is 14 years old now). Though, even that is cool. Since the enemies don’t randomly call out their location to the player all the time by constantly commenting (another irritation of modern shooters), you will think you’ve cleared an area and when you move past a boulder, you find a stuck AI that shoots you to pieces. It doesn’t even seem like this is a bug, but a feature for keeping you on your toes. It feels like the enemy is truly laying in wait for you.
The game looks a little dated, but the gameplay is still top-notch. If you liked any of the modern Far Cry games (or Crysis games) then I think you’d be pleasantly surprised revisiting this classic.
I have a weekend of outdoor chores planned (damn you nice weather!). Of course, Mother’s Day is on Sunday, so my wife will call all the shots that day, but if I get some time I’ll be eager to get back to Far Cry. My son has been suggesting we drop Sonic 3D Blast and move on to Sonic Adventure, but I’d kind of like to finish 3D Blast to see it all...because I’ll never look at it again. Maybe my wife and I will try to get in more Night In The Woods, though, it does seem to have the repeated effect of putting her to sleep 20 minutes after we start playing. Oh well, I guess if that happens, I can always jump to Far Cry. :)
So, what are you playing this Mother’s Day Weekend?
