Day 66

Hibernator Pokemon

Today’s illustration is a twofer! Male Trainer Gold got to shine on the Adventure Time x Snubbull piece, and now it’s Female Trainer Gold to bathe in the spotlight! Of course, she shares it with her bear Ursaring, in a League of Legends x Pokemon crossover!

I believe it was on our big sister site Kotaku that I read that League of Legends is like the most played game at this moment of time. I myself am mostly new to the game and still learning but still enjoy it for a number of reasons. The Ursaring/Tibbers fusion came after a lot of brainstorming, and I’m so very glad I went this route.

Teddie from Persona 4. Care bears. Winnie the Pooh Bear. Banjo and Kazooie. Gummie bears. Kuma from Tekken. Monokuma. The Naughty Bear video game franchise. Ted of the Ted film franchise. Baloo. Paddington Bear. Smokey the Bear. Pedobear. Lotso Bear from Toy Story 3. The Mother Bear from Brave. Snuggie bear. Yogi Bear. The Berenstein Bears. Disney’s Brother Bear. The Charmin Bear. Five Night at Freddies. Goldilocks bears.

This is a list of all I could brainstorm in the realm of bears. I’m sure you can even add to it; the point is, I had a lot of options and nothing was clicking. As I’ve said, this series is more looser in how I’d approach the pieces since I used up 152 different styles the first time around, so going with parodies and crossovers is expected and encouraged. That said, I don’t want to do crossovers if they’re simple or lazy or phoned in.

Once I thought of Annie and Tibbers, I really felt enthusiastic about starting the piece - that spark is all I need to know or feel to push through with a work, and I immediately started soon after. The pose is referenced heavily from Annie’s splashwork, as that would help LoL fans identify why it might look familiar if they couldn’t tell right away.

That was sort of the “tell” of the piece, as the League style varies but splash art in the modern day has a very clean and highly detailed appearance and I wasn’t sure if I could replicate it. I tried my best and focused on making it look as polished as I could, while delivering the traits/designs of Female Gold Trainer (Lyra) and Ursaring as Tibbers.

Speaking of which, let’s look at Ursaring real quick since he is the focus. Normally, Tibbers is born of fire and his loose stitching shows us a roaring fire bursting at the seams from within. Ursaring’s design is sort of a let down, as he’s rather generic...I mean, he’s really just a brown bear with wierd shoulderpads and gigantic circle on his belly. His name gives more to the big picture though - Ursa Major and the stars really gave me the image that this version of the giant teddy bear come to life could be running with magic from the cosmos. I considered doing a constellation piece but the vision was very blurred. I got to make a connection to the name in this fashion and I’m very happy with that coincidence - I hope others enjoy that too.

Thanks guys for helping me kick start the week! This was a blast to do and provided plenty of challenge! The rest of the week has a bunch of lame/boring dudes so I’ll see what I can muster up for them. To close off the day, I want to show you an Ursaring piece I did for Novi at the end of last One a Day series:

I was fresh off my first Persona kick so that’ll explain the route I did :)

OK! Question of the Day! If you’re familiar with League of Legends, what other champions might transition into Pokemon like Annie and Tibbers? Don’t say Articuno for Anivia - it’s too obvious!

Exploring the creatures of Gold and Silver, Pokemon One a Day Series 2 can be seen as both a standalone project and expansion to the original marathon of artwork that sought to present one unique new illustration per day. This project builds upon the exploration of personal technical and philosophical concepts and visual styles under daily deadline to create quality works for personal and professional growth.
