I play a lot of games. Its kind of my thing—knowing as much as I can about whats going on in video games today and getting the chance to experience as many as I can before I have a real job where I only have an hour or two to play games every other day.

So starting today, I’ll be making a list of every game I play in a year the same way Stephen Totilo has over at Kotaku.

I’ll be including games from previous years I never got around to playing until this year, because I have a habit of waiting until around a year to play games people really like the year before. I just really like playing older PC games.

Something else you’ll notice is I play a lot of PC games. I have a Wii U, PS4, and PSVita but I rarely buy games for those systems unless they’re exclusive (the only reason I HAVE a Wii U) or because sometimes I don’t want to play a game while sitting in my computer chair. I have a 3DS, but I never even turned it on for this whole year, and the one time I did try about a month ago my old charger was broken and I just never bothered getting a new one.

To me, “finishing” a game is reaching the end credits, or achieving an end-game state, as you would in The Division, or Destiny: Rise of Iron. Games I began in 2015 but finished in 2016 like Dark Souls II are included on the list because I often play the first hour or two of a game then play the other 40 many months later as I did with Dark Souls II and Valkyria Chronicles.

Something shifted for me in 2016 for the kinds of games I liked to play. I spent a thousand hours in 2014 and 2015 playing a really bad competitive shooter called Counter Strike. I got bored of it thankfully and although I sunk a lot of hours into Overwatch, I had the most fun playing co-op or single player games this year. After years of hearing “TEC-9 RUSH B DO IT OR IM REPORTING YOU” from 12 year olds, sitting down and playing calming but fun games like Owlboy and Lego Star Wars is a great change of pace.

I also spent a lot of time writing reviews in 2016 which something I’ve learnt a lot from. For one, I’m good at identifying whats bad and good about a game but I’m terrible at relaying that information into text. I’ve written some reviews I’m happy about, like the ones I wrote for The Dwarves, or Wasted, because I kept them short and to the point. Other reviews I wrote like the one I wrote for Deus Ex Mankind Divided or Mafia III got my point out, but took way too long to do so and were too difficult to read.

Maybe those reviews were reflective of my first semester of college. Regardless I learned a lot about my writing and the games I played this year but one thing I learned sticks out among others: slow down and do everything one step at a time. I’ll be upping my game next year so my work is of a higher caliber as it was previously.

Can’t wait to share more stories with you guys next year, but for now here’s every game I managed to play and finish in 2016!
