I'm really feeling it!

Kabutops in Kabuto Form!? Pokemon One a Day!

Shellfish Pokemon

Rock/Water Type

Talk about a growth spurt. The once tiny creepy crawly Kabuto emerges into the deadly Kabutops, who we see is not very...umm, how do you say...Kabutops-y, in today's Pokemon One a Day illustration!

Kabuto's name in Japanese is the word for helmet, as in samurai style gear, which is what we see today. I was considering the concept for yesterday, but I didn't see a proper way to get in a nice maedate, or the front crest that is the focal point of the kabuto. Instead, there was a perfect fit for Kabutops, who's sickles were made into a stylized maedate. The design for the helmet was inspired by many different kabutos I mixed and matched through researched.

I used one image in particular for a reference which I used as a base to add in and take out details I liked. The color scheme is obviously reminiscent of Kabuto and Kabutops, and the armored plating of the Pokemon translate perfectly for creating a piece of wear that is protective in nature. This piece is purely decorative and was very fun to create.

I actually started with a dynamic piece of Kabutops lunging, a pose I was considering for Scyther. The two, with sickle arms must be related genetically, and I thought for my dex portfolio of illustration, one Pokemon with sickle arms was fine - having the other, and in this case Kabutops, appear in a non Pokemon form can keep the scythes unique to the designs of the creatures that wield them.

So anyway, I think that wraps it up today! I don't have much to say, as the piece is very straight forward and explains everything well. I think I just needed to give you guys details and insight as to how this Pokemon could be related to samurai helmets and with that said, I'll leave you to looking at the work. By the way, it only just dawned on me - you guys are zooming into the works I post, right? Please tell me you have been, because obviously it's intended to be seen at full scale and not the compressed forms that are usually presented.

Thanks guys! See you tomorrow with a fresh illustration of a piece I'm excited to share...Personally one of my favorites with the way it's shaping up.

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.

Here's a Pokemon fusion piece I did a while back...It's more of a "traditional" Kabutops ;)
