Notice the new header!? Spiffy, huh? I was forced to make one since I may have saved over yesterday's header template after making a unique one for MissingNo...D'oh! But the new one fits the newer resolution so there's that! What do you think!? Ehh, who cares! The main art is down below - Read the write up and check it out! See you in the comments section!
YES! The one actual time I can call someone a butthead and it's literally true! Today we're looking at Magmar, a duck lizard thing that can breathe flames somehow. For real's this time...Hope you enjoyed yesterday's April Fool's stunt. Sorry I hate to use you, Magmar.
This Magmar is illustrated as if he's guarding his territory, spitting flames as a warning shot.
Hope you enjoyed that little April Fool's special! I had been planning it for a while...I just wasn't sure who was going to be the victim and play the bait for the switch. Turns out it would be butt for brains Magmar. Like Electabuzz, who I see as Magmar's other half, (outside of the three of them including Jynx being their own trio) his design is unique but still leaves a bit to be desired. The main issue, of course, is that Magmar might be poopin' from his fo'head.
Like, everytime he wipes his brow when he's sweatin', he be wipin' his ass. For realz. That's why in my take, Magmar's brow is not as prominent and seen more as the furrowing of the forehead. As for the overall style...I suppose I simply went with something that was vibrant and stark, and finely polished. Today's work is a piece I really feel sums up the level of polish I've learned to build up over the time I've been working on this series.
This whole One a Day series encourages me to get creative, think outside of the box, learn about artists and new techniques...And as such as made me a stronger artist than I ever have been before, at least on the digital level. Magmar is painted very clean and rounded through shadow and lighting. There's nothing abstract about the work - it is all very fine tuned and I think only possible for me to have painted after working with so many styles and renditions that taught me to get comfortable with painting and apply color.
As for the design for Magmar, I kept to the original. I played up the flames of the chest like decals for a big rig, and added flames for the kneecaps to match the belly . I treated the yellow to have their own texture...something shiny and plasticy almost, that acts as a bit of armor. The red seen on the body and the flamenco dancer arm sleeves (lol what else could they be!?) are painted with pinks and oranges which further add to the fun colorful nature of this piece. With the hair, I made it more flame like than in the original - it looks like one big head of hair in comparison to the two trails that further accentuated the ass-piece for a forehead of the original.
So what else is there to say? I really love how this came out, and had a blast painting it! I hope you too can enjoy this molten hot Magmar for your viewing pleasure. Stay tuned for a new piece tomorrow. Thanks again and good night!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
