"Please boss! I can make the payments if you give me another week!"
"That's what you said last time Redd, and Head Honchcrow would see me set you straight for the lies you keep feedin' us,"
"I can push the wares! Let me move the counterfeits and repay the debt"!
Today's Murkrow illustration is for my Animal Crossing fanbros and sisters! So that's how and where Redd got into the dealings of the underground market...!
I think Murkrow is a very fitting Pokemon for the newly introduced dark type for the gen he debuted in. He's adorable and very distinctive with his look. I had no idea what style to go with. I rendered him out in a finished manner but that wasn't really leading to anywhere.
I knew I wanted to play up the gangster element that the Pokemon carries, so I thought about styles that could play it up. When it comes to thinking up styles, I look across fine art, movies, films, tv shows...and of course games. I've used other Ninty characters as inspiration and I realized Animal Crossing's got a distinct style and one thing led to another and I thought of building up a character rooted into the world and Redd was the perfect character to set him against.
Translating the character was simple. Everything else that followed suit with Redd, the composition, and environment was straightforward but took time to set up. I guess the challenge from there was to keep the Animal Crossing feel and also illustrate a night time setting with the right shadows and colors.
I used a pixelated background straight from the game to help root the feel of the piece to the soul of the illustration. The moon from the bg wa set up to float behind the lamp post and acts as a light source in while filling the bulb to shine. It lines up with the other 2 character to create a flow that I hope you enjoy.
So that does it gang! Thanks for tuning in! Hope you like this work whether or not you're an Animal Crossing fan, and I'd love to hear your comments and/or critiques of the work if you have any. Also, let's hear your response to the Question of the Day!
What Pokemon would you like to see anthropomorphic transformation to become a character in Animal Crossing? Give them a name, a personality, and any little quirks they might have!
