I have very fond memories of Jak & Daxter from when I was kid. It was the quintessential PlayStation 2 3D platformer from Naughty Dog, creators of Crash Bandicoot. Before leaving the series, they developed four main installments for the PlayStation 2. They were developing a fifth main entry alongside Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which was set to release for the PlayStation Portable. However, after many employee resignations and other troubles, they ultimately shelved the project in favor of working on Uncharted. This shelved project would later be handed to High Impact Games who would finish it up by 2009 and release it for the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2 as Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier. There have been no new entries in the series since, and while Naughty Dog did consider rebooting the series with a more realistic look, it was ultimately scrapped, with one of the main reasons being that they couldn’t come up with a good design for Daxter.

Now take what I’m about to say with a heavy grain of salt, as for once I can’t provide a source and I’ve since lost track of the video that initially speculated on this(And the image in question along with it).

EDIT: Found the tweet.

Sometime within the last months, the voice actor for Jak in The Lost Frontier, Josh Keaton, posted an image of himself in a mocap suit. Someone on Youtube noticed that the studio Keaton was in looked very similar to the studio that Naughty Dog uses for its motion capture sessions. While there are no clear hints as to what Keaton could possibly be working on with Naughty Dog, his history with them really only leads to one conclusion: Jak & Daxter.

Naughty Dog has the capability to work on two titles at once, and with the Uncharted series future up for debate, it wouldn’t be out of the question for Naughty Dog to be making a new Jak game alongside The Last of Us Part II. While they did shelve their first plan for a sequel and cancel their planned reboot of the series in the past, Naughty Dog has made comments in the past that suggested they would always be open to making another entry. The first instance of this was in response to Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier. They weren’t happy with the final product, seeing it as a game that should not have been the series swan song. Later, in 2014, Last of Us director Bruce Straley stated that while nothing was on the table at the time, the door was always open for Jak to return in the future.

The revelation that Keaton is doing mocap work for what appears to be Naughty Dog certainly stokes the flames for a potential Jak & Daxter revival. While he may not be the original voice of Jak, only playing the character in The Lost Frontier, he didn’t do a terrible job of it and it makes sense to go with him if they were planning to make a new entry.

If the game does in fact exist, it’s certainly unknown as to how far along it is. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy wrapped up development just last year and The Last of Us Part II is full steam ahead for likely a 2019 or 2020 release. That doesn’t leave much room for Jak unless they’ve managed to make a new game in a short amount of time or it’s early in development and won’t release until after The Last of Us. This mocap session could very well be for a teaser trailer. With the recent release of Naughty Dog’s four Jak games as PS2 on PS4 titles, it would certainly seem as if they’re setting the stage for something new(The absence of The Lost Frontier is also notable.).
