With Bloodborne fresh out this week, many of us have death on our minds. Rarely has a series been so concerned with the nature of death both thematically and in terms of gameplay as the Souls series. However, I've recently been thinking about another game that seems highly preoccupied with death and that's FF XV.
Spoilers ahead, maybe.
The following are photos and observations of images and motifs of death as seen in trailers for the game. These are simply icons making me think of the death theme that seems to have been interwoven into the plot. Some of these images come from early FF Versus XIII trailers and it is very likely some of the ideas and key plot details have changed since 2006. However, one can assume much of the original conception of Noctis and his powers have remained in tact.
The Black Prince
In the initial FF Versus XIII, the first shot we ever get of the game's chief protagonist is Noctis walking amongst dead bodies:
So, let's begin then with Noctis, dressed always in black and pensive. In lore from early footage, it is explained that Noct has received powers from the goddess Etro (more on her later) which allow him to presumably summon blades, but also see the light of dying souls.
It would appear that Noctis is imbued with the powers of the goddess of death, Etro.
A Death God Extends her Blessing
Etro in FFXV is the Goddess of Death. She is also the patron god of Noctis' homeland, Lucis. Apparently in the world, there are those who can see a mysterious light whenever Etro opens the Unseen Gate.
Picture of the Unseen Gate, where souls of the dead ascend. Not a good sign.
Noct is one of those people. It is also theorized that Noct's summoning abilities and sword powers come from Etro. She seems to be the figure here:
And is granting her powers to the four protagonists. Note she seems to provide or exist above all the swords and summons. She is the goddess of death and is blessing all the heroes with these supports:
Rotted soil, dread plague. Not your usual FF lore script.
A Set of Skulls
Just some typical skulls, the ultimate symbol of death:
Photo of Etro encased by skeleton. (BTW, isn't it nice to see actual Amano art within the game itself? It always feels "in place" in a FF game, and I can't remember a time since FFVI's character headshots that the actual Amano art has been in the game).
Death looms over his shoulder, always.
Skull engraved on the throne of Noctis' father, Regis.
Dark Imagery, Infer What you Will
Anyways, I don't know, what do you think? Am I reading to much into this? Are you excited about a FF game with a possibly Souls-ish textuality?
