When I went on road trips as a kid, if a book on tape wasn’t being played or if my family wanted a little quiet time, I would whip out the ol’ Game Boy and button mash away. Being a parent and a driver this time around, I didn’t play anything, but it reminded me of those days spent in the backseat trying to keep myself busy and entertained. Here’s a few that kept me going back in the day.
- Metroid 2: Return of Samus
Even though, I never beat it, I kept plugging away at it to go further and further into the game. I would inevitably get turned around and lost, but I had a blast up until then.
- Kirby’s Dream Land
It was the first Game Boy game that I ever finished. It took me an entire ride to do it, but I beat it, dang it! I also just really liked Kirby’s abilities of flight and aggressive eating.
I did not catch them all, but I beat the snot out of that stupid rival. I also named my Golem “King Ad Rock”, so that should count for something.
- Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
You can’t go wrong with Zelda. While it had an anti-climatic ending, it was still a joy to play. Items like Roc’s feather made for interesting departures in gameplay from the rest of the series, and as always, the dungeon design was spectacular.
What are some of your favorite road trip/vacation games? What kept you from going nutty in the backseat?
