Pidgey is the first attempt at realism I've made for this project, since Beedrill might be considered semi-realistic at best...I mean, semi realistic in the approach of rendering...not the fact that he has four stinger arms...

Originally, this work featured notes scribbled about and was more sketchier in nature. I really enjoyed that look and will definitely try it out in the future for another bird Pokemon. I kept building up the piece and it soon lost that sketchy feel so I dropped the "bird watcher sketchbook" route as Pidgey continued to shape up with the build up of light and shadows. I did some research and learned that Pidgey might have been inspired by the chickadee (too bad its called Pidgey and nothing close to a pidgeon, as Pidove in gen 5 clearly deserves that name :P) so I pulled up some images on Google and used a photo as reference.

Hope you like the work! And as always be sure to share the project with friend and family who might be interested in watching this journey unfold! Thanks! -Bonny

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the entire catalogue of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
