Memes, or maymays, which is itself a meme pronunciation of meme. They may have once been funny but now they just, well, suck. A lot.

Yes, this is probably 15% old man yells at cloud, but also they’ve definitely declined in quality over the last few years.

Don’t believe me? Here’s a chart which may help explain some things.

JFC memes used to be about fun things like Bad Luck Brian telling me he failed his test because he didn’t use a #2 pencil. Poor guy. Beyond the politicization of memes there’s the inherent laziness of new memes. Old memes required a modicum of thought and cleverness. New Memes require a complete disregard of jocular logic (a real thing, let me assure you) and are instead a mad dash race to the bottom of non sequiters. They’re lazy.

I mean. I kind of like this one because it has a cute fat cat and he’s buying some loops but then like.......

These are all bad. Really stupid. I didn’t even post the worst offenders as to get to those you have to travel to the some of the chan sites and i’m at the work writing this and don’t want to get fired. Which may also be why this is not that cohesive.

Meme turnover time also means that by the time you see a meme you’ve already seen it 0203942384290348923049823904823048 other times and you’re ready to die because you can’t take another “butterfly flying, anime dude going, is this insert thing here” or “guy, girlfriend, thing the guy likes that isn’t his girlfriend” Everyone is a comedian. But rarely is anyone funny. Maybe I’m being a bit of a meme hipster. Memes have entered the mainstream in that legitimate news organizations are covering them. The memes in my day might have sucked too (OK yeah, all your base are belong to us was awful. Hamster dance?)

I think maybe I lament the loss of online humor. Old Man Murray, Jeff K, Something Awful, Jerry Jackson Films, there just isn’t a place for these sort of internet personalities now. We have Logan Paul and Damn Daniel and GOP memes about Hillary that your mom knows is a joke (but secretly believes).

FINALLY, let me touch on something else that bothers me. “ironic usage of memes” If you post a meme about flat earth as if to say LOL FLAT EARTHERS LOOK IT ME IM A FLAT EARTHER there is literally 0 difference between you and someone who shares it with the belief that it’s true. You both shared the image, regardless of intent. You’ve made the internet a dumber place. Congratulations.

Here are some more examples of modern day “MEMES”

Memes have been co-opted, dissected, debased and diluted. The meme as I knew it is dead. Long live the maymay.
