The Pig Monkey Pokemon
DO YOU EVEN LIFT, BRO!? Today' we look at the brolic Primeape! Or at least my take on him. I kinda OD'd on the arms...But can you blame me? I had to look in the mirror and reference my physique for ol' Primeape so what can I say?
Ahem. Anyway, Primeape as an evolution is one of those creatures that look like barely an upgrade. There are a few aesthetic differences between Mankey and Primeape - his arms and legs are now hairless, he loses his tail, he gains metal cuffs around his hands and feet, and Primeape looks more...angrier?
For this work, I didn't look to redesign - something I kind of do now and then for this series and the sake of renditions for the illustrations. Instead, I wanted to have fun with the original design - I decided to juxtapose the soft furry body of Primeape with exagegrated, hard muscles in the arms and legs...or what little legs you see. Boys and girls, DO NOT SKIP LEG DAY AT THE GYM. Otherwise you gon' be runnin' around on 'dem chicken legs and ain't nobody wanna look at dose drumsticks. Ya heard?
The work otherwise is very straight forward and silly in concept and I think is an enjoyable piece in that regard. I originally planned to give similar arms/pose for Wigglytuff, and is seen in the work in progress shots for that illustration. For a fighting type Pokemon, this direction works, and was fun to do.
So there you have it! A Primeape this Christmas eve. For all of you who celebrate Christmas...HAPPY CHRISTMAS! I'll be taking tomorrow off with the series resuming on Thursday with an adorable puppy Pokemon. Think of it as unwrapping a late Christmas gift from your uncle you rarely see but everyone loves. Wait, why would I make myself an uncle? Make it a hip-young celebrity donating a gift to a charity for Christmas but was late to this one charity drive because he was at another one before, making dreams come true. Yep, that's better.
TAY people...You guys are truly amazing. You are all classy, kind, distinguished, and thoughtful people who I have come to know these last few months and am so glad to have met. From having simple conversations about games and going deeper about life, I've found that you are all responsible in playing a part to make this community so diverse and homely, and a great place for me to retreat to. Setting up Secret Santa was a start to this holiday season, and boy, did you all as a community shine with a bang. Tonight is Christmas eve, and although we may not all celebrate, I still wish you all the best during this holiday stretch. Merry, happy, bloody awesome Christmas to you all.
Yours with much love,
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
