Can sprite based games pack an emotional wallop?

I've been reading a little back and forth and back and forth on a thread and I thought it'd be interesting to turn the question in ...question over to the community.

Have you ever played a SNES game that made you a little...misty eyed? Have the onions in the room become too odoriferous while playing Thomas Was Alone? Or do you find the limited animation a severe impediment to emotional resonance?
