I am a big fan of Azumanga Daioh, and that extends to its soundtrack, because it too is wonderful. And out of a whole album’s worth of miniature toy orchestra gems, this song stands atop it all as my favorite piece.

Azumanga Daioh
“New School Term 6"/”Shin Gakki 6"
Kuricorder Quartet

“New School Term” (or “Shin Gakki,” if romanized Japanese is your preferred way to go) is one of the series’ main motifs—so main that it’s performed in six different ways!—but the rendition with the cello is the one that truly does it for me. Not even two minutes long, it’s still one of my absolute favorite instrumentals ever.

The other versions of “New School Term” are lighthearted and sunny, and very good at evoking that mood. The sixth one (according to the OST) however, offers something more poignant. That cello combined with the backing piano draws out the emotional depth hidden within the happy melody, making it a performance in perfect parallel to the tone of Azumanga itself.
