Have you ever been excited for a game, only for it to not hold your interest?

Lately, I’ve really been into HITMAN, a game which bounced off me the first few times I gave it a try. While I’ve always been a fan of the series, something about the latest one didn’t grab me right away and I moved on. Still, you can’t grace almost every best-of list and be ignored so I figured I’d give it another try.

Man, am I glad I did.

By forcing myself to stick with a single level (Paris) and complete multiple challenges, escalations, and just explore the space, HITMAN finally opened up to me and I experienced what all the (well deserved) hype was about.

This makes me think back to other games I didn’t gel with at first, only to return later on, meet it on its own terms and fall in love. The biggest one for me would be THE WITCHER III, which I did not like at first. Like HITMAN, it just didn’t grab me but once I came back to it, fell in love and spent almost 200 hours in its world, it easily became my Favorite Game of All Time. That wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t given it a second chance.

I never would have heard her song! Can you imagine?!

METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE is another example. It took a couple tries before I could adapt to its dense fighting system, all the while wondering where the silky smooth, lightning fast game everyone raved about was at. After coming back to it later on, I fell hard for its gleefully absurd story and amazing boss fights. I’m hoping the same will happen with NIER: AUTOMATA, a game I just haven’t been able to get into after several hours of trying.

Where’s the remaster?

So, any games you guys didn’t like at first, only to rediscover and fall in love? Or are there any games you’ve put aside in hopes that, one day, you’ll be able to like it? I’d love to hear about them and thanks for reading!
