Pokemon: One a Day Sandslash The Mouse Pokemon Ground Type Today, we look at Sandslash...Or Sonic the hedgehog with a color swap?
Sandslash is one of the many Pokemon I thought were really cool growing up. He's got super large claws for slashing up his enemies and then some crazy spikes lining up his back giving him this Super Saiyan 3 look...So the young Bonny was fond of this creature.
I took the spikes that are the biggest feature of the original design and put them in the spotlight. I colored them out flat and varied up their positions to give a nice layered look and feel that your eyes can follow down. I played with sprinkling some texture over the spikes to mimic a layer of dust over SANDslash but it took away from the visual strength rather than enhancing it.
As for the rest of the piece, I'd say its standard fare...The claws are important to the design so they're quite visible but because the body is not the focal point, they were laid out simply so his "hair" could take the spotlight.
I'm happy with the end result and hope you enjoy it as well! As always, I take this time to ask you to share this project around and help spread the word. Of course, I'll take this time to thank you for reading, viewing, and sharing as you have been! See you tomorrow!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the entire catalogue of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
