Today is not just another regular day. Today is the 20th birthday the PSX arrived in Europe. Along with it, a curious lunch title was on the lineup, Wipeout. A combination of “F-Zero” and “Mario Kart” with electronic dance music by both chiptune legend CoLD SToRAGE and big name artists Leftfield, Orbital and Chemical Brothers presented in amazing 3D graphics. Smooth while moving yet incredibly difficult to master, it turned many heads with reviewers and players alike. One particular gamer (yours truly) got so in the zone the a few years later began making electronic music... and has yet to stop.
The special album I bring you today is a compilation of all my Wipeout tribute works released from 2008 to 2014. “The Wipeout Legacy: Perfect Lap Edition” is a six disc, 61 track special edition compilation that for the next twenty four hours is priced “pay what you want” (why yes, even zero!) as my very personal tribute to Psygnosis, The Designers Republic and Tim “CoLD SToRAGE” Wright. Grab it from the link below.
Feel free to share and I truly hope you enjoy. Much like my time is accounted for, Wipeout too had it’s time and sadly Sony seems to believe the series has no place in the current videogame market and I truly hope offerings like the upcoming “FAST Racing Neo” on Wii U and Wipeout’s own spiritual successor “Formula Fusion” prove this trend wrong. Who knows, maybe even Nintendo will step up and offer us the ultimate “F-Zero”... but for now, let us celebrate the 20th anniversary of the PAL release of the Playstation and a big salute to the killer app that sold me the machine: Long live Wipeout! And may it go fast!
*OMAKE* While I was writing this arTAYcle up, the legend we know as CoLD SToRAGE also decided to join the frenzy and has droped the price of “Slipstream Volume 1” to zero moneys! Go grab it an tell him I sent ya.
