I'm really feeling it!

Suffering Slowbro! Pokemon One a Day

The Hermit Crab Pokemon

Water / Psychic Type

Slowbro arrives in quite the opposite form of Slowpoke today, taking the form of something more toony in a cleanly painted style! I honestly find works like this to be too tedious for my own personal take, and the less detailed the work, the more clean and prefect the coloring/marking needs to be for my standards to be presentable.

That said, Slowbro went through a number of changes before getting to this point. I tried playing around with the interpretations of his name by making him a typical "bro" /frat dude and giving him a new demeanor. Slowbro is pretty much like Slowpoke except upright but with a major twist - the x-factor that is Shelder, who evolves with Slowpoke when the two "merge".

I see Shellder as the manager of Slowbro - it will know when exactly to clamp down on the tail and prompt it's host to take action against the threat at hand. Shellder bites down and unlocks Bro's hidden potential, which would ultimately bring out a force to be reckoned with. The illustration is capturing this moment of transitioning.

Overall, it's a straightforward piece that depicts Slowbro in his traditional form with no changes to the design. It was a tough piece for me in terms of churning it out to this final illustration, but it was worth it. I personally love working on cartoony designs, and playing with shapes and concepts. As always, this project helps me understand my own abilities and how far I can push myself in so many little ways.

Anyway, thanks for looking! Hope you enjoyed your weekend and are ready for this week's artworks!

Much love,

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
