March Break Broke

Happy Weekend TAY!

Just a quick note this week, I have a ton of things to do still before my son arrives home tomorrow from spending March Break with his grandparents. My folks are bringing him back and will likely be staying the weekend.

You’d think a week without the kid would have been time to party. Sadly, this was not the case. I ended up doing terribly mundane things all week like cleaning out the garage, taking a car load of stuff to the dump and a car load of stuff to the electronics recycling (including 3 HD-DVD players!). The rest of the week was doing maintenance around the house and car shopping. Awfully adult stuff and awfully boring.

So, I didn’t play anything save for a single session of Super Mario Galaxy.

I’m still absolutely loving Super Mario Galaxy. I think it really might be the pinnacle of Nintendo gaming for me (I haven’t played Galaxy 2 yet). The gameplay and level design are amazing. It really shows why Nintendo is one of the top software developers in the world. (and the Dolphin emulator shows why they should give up making hardware and bring their creations to more powerful platforms). I can’t imagine what their software sales would be like if they brought their games to PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Galaxy is also a great example of how the Wiimote’s motion controls can be used to enhance a game instead of getting in the way. The use of an active pointer in the game is well executed and a necessary component. The waggle to attack is a great mechanic the could be easily replicated with a button press, but there is something very satisfying with the violent shaking to attack. Add in cool Wiimote steering in mini-games and the whole control scheme comes off feeling natural and not forced like many motion controlled games.

If you haven’t played Super Mario Galaxy, you definitely owe it to yourself to try it out. It is of course available on the Wii and is now available on the Wii U via the eShop. It really doesn’t get any better from Nintendo for me.

And that’s it for my week in gaming. I likely won’t have time this weekend to play anything with the parentals around and next week is looking a little bleak as well. Hopefully I’ll be able to find some time to play some Galaxy at some point soon.
