I Ain’t Afraid To Shoot ’Em In The Back

Happy Weekend TAY!

Finally a little reprieve from the nasty hot and muggy weather we had around here last week. I spent some time at the beginning of the week sawing more of our old hot tub apart only to have the stinging of bumblebees let me know they’d moved in. I don’t even know where the nest is and getting under the hot tub is pretty much impossible . I’ve sprayed the crack I see them using as an entrance with a variety of products, but because I’m not directly in contact with the hive, I’m having little effect. I’ll try stopping up the entrance altogether with some expanding spray foam, but otherwise I’ll have to wait for the weather to turn cold again before attacking them. Winter is coming bees!

I didn’t have a lot of time for any gaming last week, though I did manage a bit here and there, especially with Fallout: New Vegas.

I finally seem to be over the initial hump in the difficulty that usually comes with starting RPGs. I’m certainly not godlike, but I can finally hold my own, though with a little help.

Me On The Left, ED-E (Companion Bot...no not that type of companion) above me. Boone (companion #2) right.

I now have two companions that take a lot of the heat off me. (Thanks Muck for pointing out the one I missed). Like most Bethesda games, once you can hire, befriend, or summon a companion, the game becomes so much easier. As primarily a melee player, it is nice to have the companions take the agro initially with ranged attacks as I move in to clean the enemy’s clocks...though really I just mess their clocks all over the ground.

I was having issues with the Legion assassins when I posted last week, but that’s now turned into a gold mine. Instead of having to flee (or die) from these encounters, my group now can usually prevail and profit from the awesome loot these assassins drop. I even found a thermic lance for my character in this loot which is such an amazing melee weapon. Now I relish these assassination attempts in hope of finding more lances; they are SO expensive to repair.

This Is My Lance, It’s Not A Gun, It’s Not For Shooting, But Boy Is It Fun.

I did lose about an hour of play last week as I had to go back to an older save file after clearing out a town. I don’t know what happened but after I cleared an area of Legion soldiers I was suddenly on the shitlist for the NCR. The NCR are the people fighting against the Legion and are apparently friends to me, so the sudden shift in behaviour had me confused. It was hard to determine what I had done to incur the wrath of the NCR, as looking on the internet and not spoiling stuff is nearly impossible. From what I can gather, clearing the area might have actually benefited another faction that was against the NCR. Since I didn’t have a quest for that area yet I wasn’t able to know the outcome of my actions. There are also apparently glitches that affect your status with factions, so I really don’t know what the issue was but it sucks to lose that precious hour of play having to revert to an older save.

Other than New Vegas, I made a bit more progress with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune which my wife and I are really enjoying. It still has some issues being an older game that the remake doesn’t address (like fairly shoddy enemy AI), but in general the game holds up very well and is loads of fun in combat. People always seem to complain about the first game, but I find myself having a great time with it again after all these years.

Oh yeah, I also finished the sixth episode of Minecraft: Story Mode with my family. The series is definitely geared for younger kids and lacks the real consequences to your actions like other Telltale games. My son (who’s 9) immensely enjoys the series, but my wife tends to nod off while we play and the last episode actually found me falling asleep as well. There is much less interactivity to these games than most Telltale games and the story isn’t that compelling. The latest episode was filled with the following Youtube “stars”:

Joseph Garrett as Stampy Cat

Stacy Hinojosa as Stacy Plays

Dan Middleton as DanTDM (The Diamond Minecart)

Lizzie Dwyer as LDShadowLady

Jordan Maron as CaptainSparklez

I don’t actually know any of these people other than Stampy Cat and DanTDM, but those two are HUGE with my son. The kid watches The Diamond Minecart religiously and was beyond thrilled with the inclusion of Dan in the latest episode of Minecraft: Story Mode. It was a cute story, but I hope this series ends at episode 8, I really don’t want to play (or pay for) any more of it. I love my kid, but there are limits.

This weekend starts my wife’s vacation so we have loads of activities planned, though that will probably leave little time for gaming. Hopefully we’ll be able to squeeze in some time for Rock Band 4 as a family and I will of course pick at Fallout: New Vegas when I can, though “picking” at New Vegas often takes at least an hour or two.

I’m also still looking for someone to fill in for me here on August 20 and 27 as I’ll be away on holiday. Please let me know in the replies if you feel up to it. You can just ramble on about what you’ve been playing...that’s what I’ve been doing all these years.

So, what are you playing this weekend?
