Happy Weekend TAY!
I probably should have asked someone to fill in for me this weekend since I played pretty much nothing all week. This was due to the fact that my wife and I are leaving for Vancouver on Sunday and I have been slammed all week and still have so much to do before we leave. Oh well, that’s what I get for not planning ahead.
I did manage a little more Mafia III at the beginning of the week and I haven’t budged much from my initial impressions. The overall package provides a great story, exciting game mechanics, and an engrossing environment; all of which is essentially ruined by the shoddy AI. It is infuriating since the game hits many of those notes that lead to greatness. Even with the repetitive gameplay that this genre of games seems unable to avoid, the fantastic mechanics could have overcome most of the player fatigue...*IF* that AI wasn’t so stupid.
I’ve started to abandon the stealth mechanics and find myself running into situations with guns blazing just to provide some challenge to the game. Any player using stealth and patience can beat any of the combat scenarios against the ridiculously predictable AI.
I’m still having fun with Mafia III, despite the game feeling essentially broken. It is hard to ignore the craftsmanship that went into this game and I’m having a great time with the story. I’d love to know how the game passed the testing phase with such terrible AI. I suspect it was just pushed out the door after a long development cycle. It is sad that something that could have been truly great is hamstrung in such a fashion.
This weekend will be a whirlwind of packing and plane rides and next week will see little to no gaming. I’ve snagged my kid’s Vita for the plane and I am hoping I can finally finish off Uncharted: Golden Abyss. I’ve also loaded it up with WipEout and The Binding Of Isaac, so I’ll be well taken care of. On top of those games, I’ve become addicted to Wazhack on iOS, so I’m sure I’ll be playing loads of that on my phone as well.
What are you playing this weekend?
