My Brain Is Full
Happy Weekend TAY!
It just keeps raining around here, but that’s fine by me. I had enough to do indoors last week and the rain helped excuse me from doing any outdoor chores. I’m thankful I don’t live in a flood prone area and I hope that none of you are experiencing any flooding.
I’m *still* setting up my new TV. I’m not sure how much more my poor old brain can take at this point. Moving to a new TV is a lot of work; I’m sure most of you here know what a joy and a pain a new TV can be. You have to learn a new OS for a TV and, if you are like me, spend hours upon hours calibrating and recalibrating picture settings. Kudos to Microsoft for including basic calibration tools in the Xbox One, it sure makes things quicker to get a baseline setting for that console. Pity there doesn’t seem any easy way to calibrate HDR yet, hopefully someone will release a UHD screen calibration disc before too long.
I spent all week running more cables (through holes I punched in walls much to my wife’s displeasure), removing said cables and running different cables, only to eventually find my way back to the original cables. I’ve moved my PC just outside my game room since cable length is the Achilles’ heel of 4K signal. I think I’m finally in a good place with all the hardware setup and the TV settings are slowly coming together.
I’ve spent hours on the web looking at forums about my TV and trying to educate myself on the ins-and-outs of 4K and HDR settings. On my last television, I was happy to simply use RGB for all my machines, but I’ve finally been somewhat forced to look at YCbCr with 4K. It is a lot to take in and there are so many differing opinions on settings that I’m still a little lost. If anyone in the tech savvy crowd around here can explain why I’d want YCbCr 4:4:4 at 8 bit colour depth over YCbCr 4:2:2 with a 12 bit color depth (for gaming), you’d be my hero.
Add to the mix my kid’s teacher’s psychotic proclivity for a never ending deluge of giant last-minute tests to cram for and that was the story of my week.
Hopefully I’ll be able to wrap things up with the TV this weekend and finally be able to use and enjoy it. In a bad bit of parenting and as a desperate move (bribe) to keep my kid studying while I was calibrating the new TV, I promised I’d show him Deadpool on UHD Blu-ray (our only UHD Blu-ray) once I had everything up and running. My wife wasn’t impressed, but I’m sure that will be happening this weekend. I would also like to re-watch Guardians Of The Galaxy before seeing the second one, so maybe I can convince the family to just veg and watch movies this weekend.
I’ll get back to Ryse as soon as possible; I’m really jonesing for some video games right now. It has been almost two weeks since I’ve had a good gaming session.
So, what are you playing this weekend?
