I'm really feeling it!

The Doofus Doduo! Pokemon One a Day!

The Twin Bird Pokemon

Going in this direction, one might think Farfetch'd would evolve into Doduo. OK, maybe not, but they share some similarities in that they both feature brown plumage primarily and are avian creatures. Doduo continues the design choice of stacking one design with another. There are a lot of these in this generation, huh? That said, Doduo never really caught my eye - for same reasons like Farfetch'd but at least he evolves!

My focus today is on the style of interpretation rather than the Pokemon. I suppose this happens when I personally don't feel too inspired because of my opinion the creature. That said, this is a good chance for me to try new brushes and what not. In this case, something chalky and full of texture. I really see a lot of potential with this brush, and will try it out soon, perhaps for a comic or something!

Anyway, Doduo's main feature is that he's a two headed creature sharing one body. As it's always running, I put it in motion, and tried versions where he was standing but the work was so boring. I tried to add some life by making it lanky and full of life with twists and turns with the neck and legs. The heads and bodies become the bases for these appendages and share the same texture that feels fluffed but in a very sharped way, which makes no sense when written like that.

The piece is exaggerated in how a creature running so fast might get so bendy and twisted and trip over itself in haste! To help with the movement of the piece, I needed to alter the colors.

The palette from the original have been changed up a bit, to be made a bit more exciting as the usual Doduo is kind of boring. The browns have been upped to a more orangey tone with yellow highlights that almost turns these tufts of feathers into flames. The beaks and legs are a more traditional birdy-yellow opposed to the boring desaturated peach tones. The black of the neck has been made blue, complimenting both orange and yellow.

So yes, that wraps up today's illustration! Working with Pokemon I'm not a fan of isn't the best of times, but I still try to do something that let's me explore techniques and styles, so they do provide me with some good in the form of experience. Thanks as always for reading and viewing my work, and have a fantastic weekend!

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
