After five days of being in an epic struggle with EA's Origin servers, I finally managed to get a hold of Dragon Age: Inquisition. I've heard a lot of interesting things about the game so far, like how there are incredibly expansive areas and how the dialogue and characters are fantastic and how much it gives fans of the series a big ol' loregasm, but honestly? I didn't get to any of that yet. I spent my entire morning before class going over the character customization.
Apparently I wasn't the only one who did this, either. Every single other person that I've talked to about Dragon Age since I got it downloaded said that they spent at least one and a half hours on the character creation. To be fair, every other person that I've talked to in this scenario is actually just Unimplied, but still. It began to make me wonder how much fun I have doing dumb things that aren't actually the focal point for the games.
For example, I love character creation, but for some reason I also love the kind of grindiness and relaxation that comes with gathering materials. This could be gathering fruit in Animal Crossing, or going around and chopping down trees in Fantasy Life, or mining a whole bunch of ore in Final Fantasy XIV. It totally wasn't intended to be as interesting and engaging as I found it, but nevertheless I still fell in love with it.
Are there any dumb things around in games for you like this, TAY? Did you spend hours fishing in Ocarina of Time at Lake Hylia? Did you hang out at the beach in Animal Crossing: New Leaf when it rained just trying to catch that coelacanth? Did you grind to stupidly high levels in Bravely Default just to feel super cool when you steamrolled everything for the next couple of hours? Maybe you spent hours trying to memorize all the super jump locations in Halo 2? Whatever it is, talk about your weird gaming fascinations below!
Not a fan of anything but the bare basics? Never bothered to learn how to catapult things with a Scorpion on Blood Gulch? Well then, feel free to talk about life, love, gaming, or whatever else you desire. The Wednesday Graveyard Shift is now open!
