Hey everyone! Welcome to the Graveyard Shift, the nightly hang-out hosted by Kotaku’s reader-run blog, TAY. This is a place to talk about anything - your lives, your gaming habits, or whatever else you desire. Hop on in and join the discussion! When you’re done here, you could always go check out the articles over at TAY or TAYClassic! Or, if this is your first time at TAY, please check out this TAYtorial!
I’m sure we’ve talked about making incredibly ridiculous decisions about buying things, TAY—impulse buys are the absolute worst. I’m typically pretty good at them (unless it’s a gift for someone else), but there are some times I just kind of slip up. Last weekend was one of those times.
Basically, I finished up with everything and got through all of my finals and was feeling pretty good about everything—managed to pump out more pages than I would care to think about and probably read well over a thousand pages from random scholarly articles or weird novels that I doubt I’ll ever think of again. Long story short, I was stressed and decided that I needed something to celebrate the year being over. I was gifted some currency for Amazon a few days earlier and decided, “Eh, why not?” and ended up putting it towards the most pointless thing ever: an imported Vita Slim.
But it’s white, so it’s totally worth it. Nobody ever has a white Vita slim.
I’m not going to lie, I wasn’t a huge fan of my regular Vita. It was a giant brick of a portable and just incredibly unweildy. It made my hands cramp up to use, it wouldn’t fit into any of my bags properly, the sticks were just begging to have issues if I transported it in anything other than a specialty case—but doing that would make the size problem bigger. All in all, I didn’t think it was a very good portable. Interesting device, horrible portability.
Long story short, I decided to give the Vita another shot, ended up grabbing the Slim on a whim, and... I love it. It feels better, it doesn’t weigh as much, I don’t need to charge it every two hours, and I can actually fit it into things I own that were designed for carrying normal things. All because it was just about an inch or two smaller—well, except for that battery life thing.
Here’s my question for you tonight, TAYers: If there was one thing you could change about a piece of gaming hardware that bugged you for forever, what would it be? Would you have made every NES a top-loader? Would you give the PS4’s controller more battery life? Get rid of the white/black buttons on the XBOX controller? Make the light gun for Duck Hunt heavier? Talk about it down below!
Do you think that hardware is a protected form of art? Is it all fine the way it is? Well then, feel free to talk about life, love, gaming, or whatever else you desire. The Tuesday Graveyard Shift is now open!
