After only being available as an Amazon App Store exclusive, the Android version of Telltale Games’ The Wolf Among Us, featuring characters from the Fables comic book series, is now available through the Google Play store. You can read more about that on Android Police.
The game has already been out for PC/Mac (sold directly from Telltale Games), as well as for iOS, Steam, and Android by way of Amazon, and since the game itself has already been well and thoroughly reviewed here on TAY (with some minor spoilers), I’m just going to add my two cents on how the Google Play Android version seems so far, played on a Nexus 5. Update: once I got a Nexus 9, I installed it on that, and it’s even better played on a nice big tablet.
The game itself is a mix of video cuts, interactive point and click (viewing or picking up items by clicking on them), and a bit of action like swiping in the direction indicated to avoid an attack, or rapidly tapping a specified point, most of which is simple enough, but some of the rapid tapping gave me trouble on my phone, and I had to try again a couple times. It works fairly similar to other point and click games like The Room, Yesterday, or Tesla’s Mist, but with more inter-cut video.
It seems well suited to mobile gaming, you can take it with you where ever you go, and it even works in airplane mode (an advantage over the Amazon app version since all their apps require you to be signed into your account). The first episode is free, and the rest can be bought through in-app purchase, either for $4.99 each, or as a $14.99 bundle for episodes 2-5.
So far it’s a fun game, and since it’s supposed to take place prior to the comics, I don’t have to worry that I’ve only read the first two collections so far. And as the review (and the game itself) mentions, there are choices you make as you go, which gives this game good replay value.
Here’s a few screen shots taken from my phone, showing the menus, and some of the opening scene.
